About Us

Our History

Effingham Animal Rescue Sanctuary aka EARS was organized in January of 2010 by passionate volunteers who believed that the number of animals euthanized in our community could be reduced through education and promotion of responsible pet ownership.

To that end, EARS offers many programs including, low-cost spay/neuter, feral cat Trap Neuter & Release or (TNR), Critical Animal Care, and educational programs, and the rehoming and quality adoption of pets. Now more than a decade later, through a huge community effort and the hard work of many passionate people and organizations throughout the area, Effingham County is no-kill.

We are Foster-Based

EARS is a foster-based sanctuary, which makes us a bit different from other pet adoption agencies in our area. 100% of our animals are in foster homes being loved and cared for by foster families who open their homes and hearts to act as foster parents until permanent placement is established.

We solely rely on the community support for donations of money, time and talent. We welcome fosters and volunteers with open arms as without them we could not exist. Please consider joining us in our efforts.

We are a Non-Profit Organization

EARS is a volunteer based not-for-profit 501(c) 3 charitable organization who relies on supporters dedicated to rescue.

We are a licensed animal shelter/foster home organization with the Department of Agriculture in Illinois. Shelter licenses and foster licenses are renewed each year and the organization undergoes a yearly inspection.

Our Pets are Fully Vetted

Each animal coming into EARS is fully vetted, receives a heart-worm test, receives a microchip, and receives prevention medications for heartworm and fleas.

Local and extended-community veterinarians also verify or perform spay or neuter on EVERY animal. We are extremely grateful to our vets without whom we could never provide the health care necessary for these animals.
